2nd International Urban Geographies of post-Communist States Workshop: Similarity and difference in post-Communist urban change

Where

Stockholm

Contact information

Abstract submission deadline

8 OCTOBER 2007

Information

Dear colleagues!
Please allow me to introduce myself and invite you to the 2nd International Urban Geographies of Post-Communist States workshop, to be held in Stockholm, Tallinn, and on the Baltic Sea, on 7-10 December 2007. The theme of the workshop, “Similarity and Difference in Post-communist Urban Change”, emphasizes the diversity of the urban experiences of the Eastern and East Central European cities while recognizing the continued importance of their more or less shared experience of state socialism, central planning, and general transition towards a democratic society with a market economy. With this in mind, the workshop welcomes a wide array of empirical and theoretical contributions on geographical issues relating to the “post-communist” city.
The workshop is a follow-up of the very successful Urban Geographies of Post-Communist states stream of sessions at the Inaugural Nordic Geographers’ meeting in Lund, Sweden, 10-15 May 2005, which resulted in the publication of a special issue of Geografiska Annaler B: Human Geography, no. 2/2007 (“Metropolitan processes in post-communist states”). The objective is to provide a well-focused meeting place for urban geographers with a special interest in the countries of post-socialist East Central Europe (including the Balkans) and the Former Soviet Union. The workshop will allow more time for the presentation and discussion of individual papers (probably about 30 minutes, of which 20 for the presentation and 10 for the discussion) and for the development of future research cooperation.

Information

A great diversity of languages is spoken in the Caucasus, most of which have rich inflectional systems, on the noun (e.g. North-East Caucasian), on the verb (e.g. North-West Caucasian), or both (e.g. South Caucasian).

The Caucasus offers rich material for studying genetically diverse languages being in close contact for centuries, e.g. Georgian (South Caucasian) with Abkhaz (North-West Caucasian); Ossetian (Indo-European) and Batsbi (North-East Caucasian); Armenian (Indo-European) with Azeri (Turkic); or Kumyk (Turkic) with major North-East Caucasian languages of Daghestan; or, for a much shorter period, the languages indigenous to the region being in contact with the unrelated Russian and Turkish. While much is known about the contemporary grammar of individual languages of the Caucasus, much
less can be said with regard to the various contact situations and their impact on the morphosyntax of individual languages. Our workshop aims to broaden the knowledge on this subject.

We invite researchers working on morphological variation and change in the languages spoken in the Caucasus to submit abstracts for participation in the workshop, planned to be held at the 13th International Morphology Meeting. We would like to invite contributions dealing with contact-induced morphological changes in any language of the Caucasus region. This includes investigations of changes driven by influence from any other language of the region, irrespective of the genetic affiliation of the languages in contact. Of great interest are not only inter-family, but also somewhat more
subtle intra-family contacts, such as contacts between various North-East Caucasian languages spoken in adjacent areas or neighboring villages. Contributions exploring morphological variation and language-internal morphological changes are also welcome.

The forty-seventh annual meeting of the Western Regional Science Association will be held on the Big Island of Hawaii at the Hilton Waikoloa Village Resort. The conference will begin on Sunday afternoon, February 17, with a special Opening Session and Reception. Paper sessions will be scheduled Monday through Wednesday, February 18-20, 2008.

The WRSA meeting includes a series of Remote Regions/ Northern Development sessions to accommodate social scientists who have a special interest in research on economic, social, political, and
>   cultural issues in remote, sparsely settled regions in the circumpolar north and elsewhere.  In the past, researchers from Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, Greenland, Finland, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand, Micronesia, Israel, Russia, and the coterminous United States have presented papers.

The Remote Regions/ Northern Development sessions are in their twenty-fifth year. We are again issuing a general call for papers from economists, political scientists, anthropologists, sociologists, historians, planners, and others involved in research in northern and other remote regions.

POTENTIAL TOPICS
General topics include the analysis and discussion of economic, political, and social-cultural change in remote and sparsely settled regions. Examples of specific topics include: the consequences of new technology; the effects of government expenditures; the  conditions for success or failure of development projects; relations between the subsistence and market economies; regional benefits and costs of development; economic integration and cultural preservation; community development; changing social patterns; and Native sovereignty and federalism. Papers on any topic consistent with the general theme are welcomed.

This year we are interested in encouraging papers addressing two particular topics:

·        Migration in remote regions
Institutional change and resource governance in remote regions

We would also welcome special sessions and are particularly interested in sessions which address a particular theme from the perspective of a number of countries or regions. Please contact Lee Huskey if you are interested in organizing such a session.

We will be sending information about association membership, registration, hotel reservations, and related matters to those responding to this call. You can find out more about the meetings at the WRSA web site: http://www.u.arizona.edu/~plane/wrsa.html

Fun Places:(Extra)ordinary Getaways in Cold War Eastern Europe

Information

This is a call for papers about places where Eastern Europeans went to get away from the everyday routines of work, home, and school during the Cold War era.  Museums, music venues, pubs, sports centers, tourist destinations, and houses of culture are some of the places that can be explored.  What did these places look like?  Who built and managed them, and for what end?  Who visited them, how often, and why?  One conceptual question tying the papers together could be whether these places were ever purely sites of fun or entertainment, as opposed to spaces politicized in some way.   Another could be whether fun places gave Eastern Europeans opportunities to act privately while out in public. The organizers hope that the panel topics will represent a diversity of Eastern European countries and peoples, and be interdisciplinary. The panel will meet at the National Popular Culture & American Culture Association's Joint Conference, March 19-22, 2008 at the San Francisco Mariott in San Francisco, California.  For more information on the conference, visit the website at http://pcaaca.org/conference/2008/index.php.

Proposals should be approximately 200-250 words in length.  Please include with them your preferred mailing address, telephone number, and email address, and mention of any audio/visual necessities for your presentation.

Information

The Department for Oriental Studies of Bonn University (Germany) and the Department of European Studies at Amsterdam University (Netherlands) are jointly preparing a colloquium on the History of Oriental Studies in Socialist Europe, which is scheduled to take place in Amsterdam or Bonn in March or April of 2008. At present, we are looking for scholars who would be interested in participating.

We are especially interested in the following aspects:

1) How was Islam interpreted under Communism?

2) What restrictions and what opportunities did scholars of Oriental and Islamic studies face in Socialist Central/Eastern Europe? (In the case of the Soviet Union, this topic is clearly linked to the repression of scholars in the 1920s and 1930s.). Did some fields of Oriental Studies enjoy more "liberties" than others?

3) How were institutes, journals and associations for Oriental Studies  established and reformed during the Socialist period, what were their aims and tasks in teaching, research, and politics? How were departments of Oriental Studies related to other faculties?

4) How does the "Socialist image of the Orient" fit in with Edward Said's concept of "Orientalism"?

5) What was the legacy of Socialist Oriental studies after 1989/1991, and how is its history interpreted now? Did Orientalists play a role in the transformation of their respective societies?

The conference will thus be comparative in perspective, using geographical, institutional and discursive approaches to the general topic.

Currently we are preparing the list of participants, which shall include scholars from Russia, Hungary, former Yugoslavia, the Czech Republic, and Poland, as well colleagues from Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, France, and the USA. The colloquium language will be English and German; the results of our meeting will be published in English. The colloquium will be open to the public.

Scholars who are interested in participating at our meeting are welcome to send us a message containing their topic for their presentation and article, and are also kindly asked to provide their CV. The decision whether participation can be funded depends (1) on the approval of our general application by a German foundation, and (2) on the quality of the proposed individual contribution.  We also encourage the participants to apply to their home institutions for support.

In any case we would be very pleased to make the acquaintance of scholars - especially of the younger generation - who have an interest in the history of Oriental studies in Central/Eastern Europe.

Proposal deadline: 1 November 2007

Information

The ASN Convention, the most attended international and inter-disciplinary scholarly gathering of its kind, welcomes proposals on a wide range of topics related to national identity, nationalism, ethnic conflict, state-building and the study of empires in Central/Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, the Balkans, Eurasia, and adjacent areas. Disciplines represented include political science, history, anthropology, sociology, international studies, economics, geography, sociolinguistics, psychology, and related fields.

The Convention also features a section devoted to theoretical approaches to nationalism, from any of the disciplines listed above. The papers in this section need not be grounded in an area of the former Communist bloc usually covered by ASN, provided that the issues examined are relevant to a truly comparative understanding of nationalism-related issues. In this vein, we are welcoming theory-focused and comparative proposals, rather than specific case studies from outside Central/Eastern Europe and Eurasia. A dozen panels are expected to be featured in the Nationalism section.

Since 2005, the ASN Convention has acknowledged excellence in graduate
studies research by offering Awards for Best Doctoral Student Papers in five sections: Russia/Ukraine/Caucasus, Central Asia/Eurasia, Central Europe, Balkans, and Nationalism Studies. The winners at the 2006 Convention were Tammy Lynch (Boston U, History, Russia/Ukraine/Caucasus), Judith Beyer (Anthropology, Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, Central Asia/Eurasia), Zsuzsanna Magdo (U of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, History, Central Europe), Connie Robinson (New School U, Sociology, Balkans), and Wendy Pearlman (Harvard U, Political Science, Nationalism). Doctoral student applicants whose proposals will be accepted for the 2008 Convention, who have not defended their dissertation by 1 November 2007, and whose paper is delivered by the deadline, will automatically be considered for the awards.

The 2008 Convention is also inviting submissions for documentaries or feature films made within the past few years and available in VHS or DVD
format. Most films selected for the convention will be screened during
regular panel slots and will be followed by a discussion moderated by an
academic expert. Films on the 2007 Program included the Oscar-nominated
/My Country, My Country/ (US, 2007), /Vukovar-Final Cut/ (Serbia and
Montenegro, 2006), /A Lesson of Belarusian/ (Poland, 2006), /Orange
Revolution/ (US, 2007) and /Final Solution /(India, 2005).

The 2008 Convention invites proposals for INDIVIDUAL PAPERS or PANELS. A panel includes a chair, three presentations based on written papers, and a discussant. Proposals using an /innovative/ format are encouraged. Examples of new formats include a roundtable on a /new book/, in which the author is being engaged by three discussants (/nine/ book panels were featured in the 2007 Convention); a debate between two panelists over a critical research or policy question, following rules of public
debating; or special presentations based on original papers where the
number of discussants is equal to or greater than the number of presenters. Other innovative formats are also welcome.

The 2008 Convention is also welcoming offers to serve as DISCUSSANT on a panel to be created by the program committee from individual paper
proposals. The application to be considered as discussant can be self-standing, or accompanied by an individual paper proposal.

There is NO APPLICATION FORM to fill out in order to send proposals to the convention, /except for a FACT SHEET that can be downloaded at www.nationalities.org/. All proposals and fact sheets must be sent by
email to Dominique Arel at darel@uottawa.ca OR darelasn@gmail.com

INDIVIDUAL PAPER PROPOSALS must include the name, email and affiliation of the author, a postal address for paper mail, the title of the paper,

Call for Applications

Rutgers (State University of New Jersey) Women’s and Gender Studies Department and Belgrade Women’s Studies and Gender Research Center and the Department of Gender Studies, Central European University (Budapest) are pleased to announce
the 9th annual postgraduate course in Feminist Critical Analysis: Re/Producing, Consuming, Engendering. The course will be held at the Inter-University Centre, Dubrovnik (www.hr/iuc/) on May 19th 23rd, 2008.  The course will be co-directed by Dasa Duhacek of the Women’s Studies Belgrade, Serbia and Ethel Brooks of the Women's and Gender Studies Department, Rutgers University and Allaine Cerwonka of the Gender Studies Department, Central European University.

TOPIC:
This course will explore the re/production and consumption of not only gender but also of nations, bodies, sexualities and dominant socio-cultural forms. It takes up the premise that re/production and consumption are inherently gendered and thus central to engendering the boundaries of everyday life, from working, shopping, cooking, eating, to farming and ecology, and formations of race class
and ethnicity. What are the gender dynamics of re/production and consumption? By bringing these terms together we refer, on the one hand to economic practices of re/production and consumption, but also to how gender itself is re/produced, how gender is consumed as it also takes up consumption as both practice and discourse. We will interrogate the centrality of gendered bodies to re/producing, consuming and potentially disrupting the transnational capitalist order.  The course is built upon the assumption that intellectual dialogue among a diverse body of scholars from different geographical locations
will result in a better understanding of the ways in which our particular
locations are influencing our own theoretical and political choices. The number of participants is limited to 25-30 students from different countries. The participating faculty are drawn from several different European and US universities. Daily seminars take place in two 3-4 hours sessions a day.  All meetings are conducted in English.

ELIGIBILITY
IUC courses are conducted at a postgraduate level.  All postgraduate students interested in the topic may apply for participation.  Participants should seek funds from their own institutions to cover travel and accommodation costs.  Limited financial support is available for participants from Central and Eastern Europe.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
A short narrative explaining your interest in the topic and your C.V. with your current contact information should be submitted by e-mail by December 10, 2007.  Submissions will be reviewed by the Feminist Critical Analysis Selection Committee.  Awards will be announced in mid-February.

Please submit applications to Judit Zotter zotterj@ceu.hu with Dubrovnik 2008 in the subject heading.

Information

The Conference is organized by the British Association for Slavonic and East European Studies BASEES.

Numerous studies have focused on ethnic minorities in Eastern Europe mostly emphasising nationalising policies, the problem of external homelands, and effects of EU-enlargement on relations between majorities and minorities. In addition to existing studies this panel seeks to address the efforts taken by CEEC for integrating national minorities in their society. The panel aims at reviewing practices and programmes of social integration since 1989 by implementing Social Integration Programmes of various kinds.

We would like to welcome case-studies investigating the development of state minority integration programmes from various perspectives. The contributions should address the following questions, but are not limited by these:

  • Which role are state actors, international organisations, local communities and minority groups playing when initiating and executing integration programmes?
  • Which ideological, political or other conceptions stand behind these integration programmes?
  • What is the international and domestic legal basis for minority integration?
  • What – if any – was the role of minorities in the drafting of these programmes?
  • Has the original framework of integration programmes changed since its first application
  • Which problems emerged during implementation?
  • Can EU conditionality be made responsible for the implementation of integration programmes? What has changed with EU membership?

REPRESENTING ISLAM: COMPARATIVE PERSPECTIVES

When

5-6 September 2008

Where

University of Manchester

Contact information

Conference Organisers: Professor Stephen Hutchings, Dr Galina Miazhevich (University of Manchester); Professor Chris Flood, Dr Henri Nickels (University of Surrey).

Abstract submission deadline

Please send panel and paper proposals (title + 250 word abstract) by January 31, 2008 to Oxana.Poberejnaia@manchester.ac.uk

Information

We invite single-paper and full-panel proposals for the
conference ‘Representing Islam: Comparative Perspectives’ organised jointly by the Universities of Manchester and Surrey and supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council of Britain.

Representations of ‘Islam’ have a profound influence on political cultures and national identities, as well as on attitudes to immigration, security and multiculturalism. The complexity of the notion of ‘Islam’ and the heterogeneous responses that it elicits are such that there is no uniform approach to its representation and social construction. The conference addresses this complexity by treating the comparative dimension of recent representations of Islam, encompassing different nations, political institutions, media institutions, and cultures. The conference will be primarily concerned with the press, television, radio, film and the internet, but may include other channels of communication, such as
translations, speeches or pamphlets, political discourse, and the visual arts.

The comparative emphasis will be achieved at several levels: that of the single paper, that of the panel, and that of the conference as a whole. Papers and panels are therefore invited treating single nations or media outlets, or adopting a comparative perspective.

We anticipate proposals on topics emanating from the fields of Political Communication, Communication Science, Media Studies, Film Studies, Cultural Studies, Sociology, Social Psychology, Translation Studies, Sociolinguistics, and Modern Languages. Post-Soviet perspective will be represented.

Confirmed plenary speakers:
• Thomas Deltombe (France, journalist)
• Alisher Khamidov (Kyrgyzstan, journalist)
• Kenan Malik (England, writer and broadcaster)
• Prof Tariq Modood (England, Bristol University)
• Dr. Elizabeth Poole (England, Staffordshire University)

An edited volume based on selected conference papers will be published.

Accommodation and meals will be provided on campus at the University of Manchester. The conference fee will be discounted for students.

Please send panel and paper proposals (title + 250 word abstract) by January 31, 2008 to Oxana.Poberejnaia@manchester.ac.uk
